Seminar by Miranta Merkouri Language School for the better learning of foreign languages (Patris newspaper 15/9/2001)

The event organized by the European Center for Language Studies – Miranta Merkouri on Sunday morning at the IONIAN SEA hotel in Pirgos, on the occasion of entering its second decade of foreign language educational service and action, was exceptionally interesting. It was an informative event for parents and instructors with the purpose of understanding children and the finer learning of foreign languages. The foreign language teacher trainer and writer Mrs. Danae Kozanoglou discussed the topic of “Teaching and Learning”. She referred to the expectations and the reality of opinions that converge or diverge, communication and information, the targets and the procedure in learning and evolution, the diplomas, learning and evaluation, what parents should check, teaching or learning and their relationship in language learning.
Mr. Vassilis Georgopoulos, special education instructor, in his introduction referred to learning difficulties. As he characteristically stressed, “School failure is a form of missing conformity. The mechanisms are multi-dimensional. A classic categorization of the criteria responsible for their appearance are the following: 1. Organic problems. 2. deprivation of stimuli and socio-cultural opportunities. 3. psychological and emotional problems. The attempt to explain the phenomenon of school failure is characterized by the meaning of “blaming” someone. This arises from the classical concept of determinism, according to which there is a linear connection between cause and effect. In this way, we end up with a label where someone is to blame. The child is either incompetent or lazy on one hand or on the other hand the blame either falls on the teacher or on the school’s bad organization.“
Mrs. Merkouri in her greeting, stressed that the goal of the Language School was for students to properly speak foreign languages for a success without borders. Following the event, there was a rich buffet and parents and instructors had the chance to exchange opinions about the problems children face with regards to learning and the manner for them to conquer the knowledge of foreign languages more easily.
